September 27-29, Science with FLASH: Recent Results and Future Perspectives

With the start of the new Free-Electron Laser sources a new era in X-ray science has just begun. First experiments at FLASH, the XUV-Free-Electron Laser at DESY in Hamburg, and recently also at the Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) in Stanford, have shown that the unprecedented brilliance, the coherence, and the ultrashort pulses of these sources enable new insights in many different fields such as atomic and molecular physics, cluster physics, condensed matter physics, material science, femtochemistry, structural biology, and high energy density science.

September 29 - October 01, FEL 3-site meeting

The aim of this collaboration meeting is to exchange experience in the design, construction, and operation of X-ray Free-Electron-Lasers. The exchange of results from existing collaborations and the launch of new collaborations on specific issues is targeted. Since the last meeting, remarkable steps have been achieved in this field. We have observed the very successful start of operation of the LCLS, the construction of the Spring-8 XFEL is nearing its completion, the construction of the European XFEL is in full swing, and the decision has been made to extend the FLASH facility. The meeting shall give ample time for discussion of specific topics and for meeting colleagues from the collaborating laboratories. Following overview talks the program continues by work group discussion in the two areas of electron and photon beams.
Following the meetings at Spring-8 (Oct 2008) and at SLAC (Feb 2009), this 3rd meeting is organized jointly by DESY and European XFEL, making the 3rd site for hard X-ray FELs under construction or already in operation. The meeting will take place Sep 29 to Oct 1, 2010 at DESY, Hamburg, where the FLASH facility operates since 2005 for users and where the construction of the European XFEL is on-going.
The FEL 3-site meeting will start on Sep 29 at lunchtime and will end in the afternoon of Oct 1. Please note that in close vicinity to this event two other meetings will address issues of FLASH: FLASH II Meeting and FLASH Workshop on Linac Operation with Long Bunch Trains (postponed to Feb 2011).

October 11-13, Workshop on Evolution and Control of Complexity: Key Experiments using Sources of Hard X-rays

During the past two centuries, much effort has gone into understanding
various types of orders in systems obeying the laws of equilibrium
thermodynamics as described using linear response theory or the
Born-Oppenheimer approximation. On the other hand, the majority of
processes in nature involve nonlinear behavior that obeys nonequilibrium
thermodynamics from the flow of energy. Nature in its
every manifestation exhibits far-away-from-equilibrium processes,
leading to complexity of order. This is true from the Big Bang to the
coming of humankind, from chemistry and biology to geosciences and
medicine, and from materials engineering to energy sciences. In spite
of the recurrence of non-equilibrium behavior in nature and, particularly,
in every aspect of our daily activities, fundamental research
lacks an understanding of the processes involved in the temporal
evolution of complex order with precision.
This workshop will identify unexplored opportunities in the emerging
field of non-equilibrium science with a focus on the use of hard x-ray
spatio-temporal techniques that are available at operating and future
x-ray sources, including compact sources, storage rings, energy recover
linacs, and x-ray free-electron lasers.

The implementation of seeding scheme provides the possibility to have high temporal and spatial coherence together with variable polarization and precise control of the photon energy and jitter. December 16-17, International workshop on the X-ray science and instrumentation at the European XFEL

Soft X-ray Instrumentation at the European XFEL undulator SASE 3 includes two instruments: Small Quantum Systems (SQS), dealing with investigation of atoms, ions, molecules and clusters in intense fields and non-linear phenomena, and Spectroscopy and Coherent Scattering (SCS), aiming at studies of electronic and atomic structure and dynamics of hard, soft and biological nano-scale objects.
Following the previous workshops for SQS and SCS instruments and further considering the recently achieved technological and scientific results, the purpose of this Workshop is to inform the soft X-ray scientific community about recent scientific results, current developments of FEL sources and the plans for soft X-ray instrumentation at the European XFEL. A particular aim of the workshop is the coordination and synchronization of activities by the soft X-ray community.

Recent advances in free-electron laser technology have demonstrated the ability to collect millions of “snap-shot”
hard X-ray diffraction patterns from single bio-particles (e.g. viruses, cells) or hydrated protein nanocrystals. Other
modes, such as Laue diffraction, fast (correlation) SAXS, and pump-probe experiments aimed at observing protein
dynamics are also under development*.

The Center for Free-Electron Laser Science (CFEL) at DESY in Hamburg, Germany will be hosting the Ultrafast X-ray Summer School 2011 (UXSS 2011). UXSS 2011 is jointly organized by CFEL and the PULSE institute at SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory. The summer school program will be highly interdisciplinary, with topics ranging from accelerator physics to molecular biology, and is intended to give doctoral students and postdoctoral researchers the opportunity to familiarize themselves with the latest developments and opportunities in ultrafast X-ray science.
Please note that the number of summer school participants will be limited. In order to facilitate the selection of participants, we are asking applicants to provide a short text describing their educational and scientific background and their motivation for applying for participation in UXSS 2011.
